6 Degrees of Separation Book

I was asked to connect Non Format and M/M Paris together using six steps, so I first researched Non Format and M/M Paris to view there work to see what it looks like and also to see what companies they do work for. When looking at Non Format I discovered that they had done work for Coca Cola, they were part of the magnificent five team, I then research Designer Republic as I had known they had also done work for Coca Cola, I then looked at other designers who had done work for Coca Cola they were Rex and Tennant McKay. Rex’s work was a little different to the other designs, the patterns that were used in Coca Cola came out from the top of the bottle but Rex’s pattern’s were around the bottle covering the page. Tennant McKay’s work was also a little different as it had typography included in the pattern coming from the bottle, the bottle was not the main attraction like the other designs this bottle was small and the pattern and the type was the main attraction as they were the centre of the page and large, I really liked the way the typography had been used in this piece of work because it was made to look interesting, this takes me on to my next link I found a piece of work done by two Brazilian designers Julio and Victor in there work they had also made there type link in with a pattern again this made it look interesting. I then used a piece of work from M/M Paris to link in with the piece from the two Brazilian designers. The piece I choose to use was very interesting as the typography was really different it looked almost hand drawn, there was also an image in the background of it which was a face but the face looked part if the typography this is why I choose this as my last link as they have almost displayed there type the same using the images part of the type instead of them being separate.

I then created a magazine on this information I had, I could not use more then ten images and it had to be over 2000 words. I started by making my front cover plain by just having enough information needed I didn’t want it to look busy, I think it works best when the page can breath. I then done an introduction page which told you what the book was about but again the page was pretty empty there was just the heading and the information placed in a section on the right hand side of the page which made the page look clean and crisp. I then done a page for each designer basing the page on them and what they do, I made the pages again not over crowded as I wanted a lot of white space as I think this it what makes the page look as if it can breath and it also looks clean and crisp. I had a grid of three rows and four columns, I mainly used the centre row, which gave a space around the information, which I think makes it readable and not to over loaded. I then made the important information a bigger font size, which was 18pt or 22pt or depending on which was the most important. I then partitioned them off by making black bars across the top and the bottom of the text this also made it stand out. Which I think made it look good as it gave a little more style to the book. I never used headings on the other pages as I think it messed with the layout. So in the important text frames were the information was made bigger their names were included in that so I made their name a different colour, which I chose from their image. I chose the most prominent colour that stood out in their image, I think this worked well as it never took over the page but it still drew your attention to the persons name and you new who you was reading about. I also made the page numbers bold and almost as part of the design which I think looks really good, as they make the page look different. On the back of the booklet I included the full title and the names of the designers. I think this works as I have done it in the same style as the important type inside the booklet, with the bars on the top and the bottom of the type.

I think this booklet works as the layout is really simple but yet effective because
it is all the same layout it just changes slightly. Through out the book there are no drastic changes this is what makes it work. I also think the little use of colour works well as it is not too over powering. I think I can make improvements to my booklet, for example
I could of made my front cover a lot better and made it look more interesting. I think I should have made the type a lot bigger and even made it cover the page to make it stand out more. My design that I have got for the front cover now links in a lot more with the layouts in side the booklet. I do really like the book as I think it looks neat and crisp there is also a lot of breathing space which I think balances the spreads out.
